Chapter Summer Social

Members Meeting -  Thursday August 13th 2015

 Raynor's Home - 4 PM

Chapter Summer Social
BBQ and Pool party with updates re the symposium and other chapter activities.

Hosted by Marg & John Raynor

Summary: This has been an interesting year as we try to balance our activities with our role as hosts for the OAS symposium in October and our regular chapter activities. We have had a few small meetings and a couple of larger ones, all have which have appealed to various segments of our membership.
While we need to keep our "eye on the ball" when it come to planning for what is shaping up to be a fantastic symposium, we also want to serve the needs of our members that are not yet involved in this process. As you are aware, we will need volunteers to share the load at the symposium and we hope to have a volunteer  schedule ready for this meeting. Beyond this, the executive would like to hear from the membership regarding our aims, goals, objectives and plans with an "eye to the future" - after the symposium.
Come with your ideas for our future and as we share this social event - let's talk.
Meetings are open to the public at no charge.

Call for Silent Auction Donations

Ontario Archaeological Society 42nd Annual Symposium

Hosted by the Huronia Chapter
in partnership with the
Eastern States Archaeological Federation and Huron Wendat Nation

Midland Best Western Highland Inn, October 16-18, 2015

Call for Silent Auction Donations

The Silent Auction is a popular event during the OAS Symposium and a
great way to raise money for the Society. To ensure the success of our
one and only annual fundraiser, we need your help!

Please consider donating new or gently used items such as archaeology
and history books, services, jewelry, antiques, crafts, tools, gift
certificates, gift baskets, etc. This is also a great opportunity for
businesses to showcase their products and services. All donations will
be acknowledged on silent auction donor boards during the symposium and
in the program package. You will also receive much personal gratitude
from your silent auction organizing committee!

Last year, several OAS chapters assembled and donated unique one-of-a
kind gift baskets with items that showcased their chapter and regions.
These were a big hit with our bidders and we hope that more chapters
will participate this year!

Silent auction donation items are now being accepted for the OAS 2015
Symposium. Please contact Ellen Blaubergs at eblaubergs@rogers.com
by October 13, 2015 and include the following information: donor name
and contact info, description of item(s) to be donated, value of
donation, minimum/starting bid (if you like). Please also indicate if
you are bringing the donation to the symposium, giving it to someone to
bring, or would like to send/courier it. We’ll provide an address if you
prefer this last method.

Thank you for your support!

Atironta - Presented by - Dr. John Steckley

Members Meeting -  Wednesday July 8th 2015

Midland Public Library - 7 PM

Atironta
(the Rock nation leader with whom Champlain stayed during his 1615-16 visit to Huronia)
Presented by - Dr. John Steckley
Author And Lecturer

Summary:  In 2015 we have seen, and will continue to see a lot of attention on the historic persona of Samuel de Champlain, as part of the 400th year commemoration of his trip to Ontario. Efforts are being made to look at the other side of the trip, the Wendat side. One way of doing that is learning about Atironta (‘he draws or attracts’), the Rock nation leader with whom Champlain stayed. There is a great deal of story to tell. In this presentation I will talk both about the individual, and about the history and significance about his name

Meetings are open to the public at no charge.

The Wendat of Tay Point

Members Meeting -  Wednesday June 10th 2015

Wildfire Outdoor Education Centre - 7 PM

The Wendat of Tay Point

Presented byPresented by - Dr. Bonnie Glencross and Dr. Gary Warrick

Summary:  Tay Point holds the remains of several Wendat villages. Given the limits of its geography and Wendat ecology, Tay Point probably hosted only one Wendat community for 250 years - 1400 - 1650. Field investigations at the Allen Tract site , and recent analysis of a collection from the nearby Chew site, both early 17th century sites, indicate that they are probably mother-daughter villages - a sequential move of the same community. There is the distinct possibility that the Allen Tract site and Chew site are actually the remains of Carhagouha and Quieunonascaran, the two village sites visited by Le Caron, Champlain, and Sagard. The challenges of identifying the archaeological remains of known historic Wendat villages will be discussed.

Meetings are open to the public at no charge.

Please note that Wildfire Outdoor Education Centre has graciously offered their facilities for this event.

Dr. Alicia Hawkins - The Ahatsitstari (Allen Tract) site

Members Meeting -  Wednesday February 11th 2015

Midland Public Library - 7 PM

Presenter - Dr. Alicia Hawkins:  The Ahatsitstari (Allen Tract) site

In 2013 a member of the Huronia chapter noticed evidence of illegal digging at an unregistered site near Penetanguishene. Members of the Huronia chapter were active in the registering and remediation of the site. In this presentation I will discuss what we learned about this site based on the materials recovered from screening backdirt and from the stage 2 investigations by the Laurentian University field school. We thank the Huron-Wendat Nation for support for on-going work on their ancestral sites.

Dr. Alicia Hawkins

Dr. Hawkins is an anthropological archaeologist with a particular interest in methods. During her graduate career she undertook fieldwork in Egypt, Syria, and Ghana. The Middle Stone Age technocomplex, the Aterian, was the subject of her doctoral dissertation. Since completion of her dissertation she has focused on work in Ontario. She has particularly enjoyed teaching an archaeological field methods course for undergraduate students and has been privileged to have been able to work on a number of Huron Wendat sites in Simcoe County.
