The Wendat of Tay Point

Members Meeting -  Wednesday June 10th 2015

Wildfire Outdoor Education Centre - 7 PM

The Wendat of Tay Point

Presented byPresented by - Dr. Bonnie Glencross and Dr. Gary Warrick

Summary:  Tay Point holds the remains of several Wendat villages. Given the limits of its geography and Wendat ecology, Tay Point probably hosted only one Wendat community for 250 years - 1400 - 1650. Field investigations at the Allen Tract site , and recent analysis of a collection from the nearby Chew site, both early 17th century sites, indicate that they are probably mother-daughter villages - a sequential move of the same community. There is the distinct possibility that the Allen Tract site and Chew site are actually the remains of Carhagouha and Quieunonascaran, the two village sites visited by Le Caron, Champlain, and Sagard. The challenges of identifying the archaeological remains of known historic Wendat villages will be discussed.

Meetings are open to the public at no charge.
